Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Neil Heron specializes in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) and General Practice (GP), being on the General Medical Council (GMC, UK) registry for both. Being a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM, UK) and Member of the Royal College of General Practice (MRCGP), Dr. Heron received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow. Dr Heron is also an elected Council member of the FSEM, UK. His knowledge of sport and sports medicine was first established through his own participation in semi-professional sport, refereeing, and coaching.  He has been Team Physician to various high-level sport teams, including the professional cycling team Team Sky, Crusaders FC, Linfield FC and Northern Ireland international football teams.  He has experience of working at multi-sport games and recently worked as a medical officer for the World Police and Fire Games, 2013, as well as the Giro D’Italia cycling road race and attended the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as a medical officer.

In 2012, Dr Heron was awarded the ECOSEP (European College of Sport and Exercise Physicians) travelling fellowship, which allowed him to visit various top level Sport and Exercise Medicine institutes, including Barcelona FC.  He has also undertaken a Primary Care Sport Medicine fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2012-13 as well as a Sport Medicine Team Fellowship with the Sydney Swans AFL team.  

Dr Heron is ATLS, ALS, ALSO, IMMOFP, SPoRTs and SportPromote trained and competent and is a trainer on the SPoRTs course.  Dr Heron is involved in under- and post-graduate medical curriculum teaching and is actively involved in research, being currently funded by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) to undertake a PhD in the area of rehabilitation. Dr Heron has also completed various Master degrees, including a Masters in Public Health.
