  • TheGrowth Restriction Intervention Trial(GRIT)Best management and optimum time of delivery of severely IUGR Fetus.   Published in 2012.
  • MD Thesis. PET Studies:Predictive Role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor VEGF – Soluble flt-1, Fibronectin, Inhibin A, Activin A, Serum Leptin and P Selectin in Pre-eclampsia. To design a biochemical screening test with one or a combination of above factors, this will identify patients at risk of placental insufficiency.  (Research supported by NIMBA/Tiny Life).  Thesis accepted November 2008.  Graduation, December 2008. 
  • Randomised Controlled Trial to Analyse the Effect of Folic Acid in Second and Third Trimester of Pregnancy (FASTT). The Effect of Raised Homocystein and its Consequences in Pregnant Patients.  Research project in collaboration with the University of Ulster, Coleraine under the supervision of Prof Helen McNulty, Faculty of Life and Health Sciences.
  • Research in conjunction with anaesthetic colleagues about maternal tilt and its effect on maternal and fetal circulation before, during and after Caesarean section.  Effects analysed through pulse oxymetry, fetal umbilical artery Doppler and fetal pH.  N Wallace.

 

Research Work in Progress

 

·            Non-Invasive Prenatal Study (NIPT) with IONA.  Premaitha Health.  Multicentre prospective study starting soon.  Approved by ethics and currently recruiting in six tertiary centres in England.  The study is registered on the NIHR portfolio. 

  • Cervical length normal gram in prima gravida twin pregnancies.  Prospective study in Royal Maternity Hospital, Belfast Trust.  Funds for the study have been secured and currently in the process of ethical submission.
  • Applied to be a centre recognised for ASPRE Study.  A multicentre randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of low dose Aspirin in reducing pregnancy complications.

·            GENISIS Study; Ultrasound measurements of fetal head in late third trimester and the labour outcomes.  A multicentre trial under Perinatal Ireland.  Work in progress.

·            MERIDIAN Trial; Multicentre trial to decide what is the best modality to obtain the best information in fetus with ventriculomegaly.

Dr Samina M Dornan specialises in dealing with complex problems affecting both the mother and the unborn baby, including high risk antenatal mothers, multiple births and diabetes complications.

Obstetricians across Northern Ireland often refer their patients to her care for her specialist expertise.  Dr Dornan regularly accepts women from other hospitals to be delivered under her care in Belfast, under these circumstances.

 

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

 

Dr Samina M Dornan is a Consultant Sub-Specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine based in the Regional Unit at the Royal Maternity Hospital, Belfast.

Having obtained her RCOG certification in Maternal Fetal Medicine in 2009, Dr Dornan was appointed as a Consultant in Professor Basky’s unit at St Georges, London where she was lead clinician and screening co-ordinator for haemoglobinopathy, high risk antenatal mothers, multiple births and diabetes.

In September 2011 the Regional Fetal Medicine Unit at the Royal Maternity Hospital acquired her services as a Consultant in Maternal Fetal Medicine where she is lead clinician for multiple births.

Dr Samina M Dornan’s aim is to enable expectant mothers to have a positive and reassuring pregnancy and birthing experience, through her unique combination of expert clinical knowledge and her heart-warming personal one-to-one approach.
