Mr McCaffrey has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2014, specialising in the treatment of hip and knee arthritis with joint replacement. He performs standard joint replacement and robotic assisted joint replacement. He has carried out the majority of robotic assisted hip and knee joint replacements in N. Ireland using the Stryker MAKO SmartRoboticsTM system.

Mr McCaffrey qualified as a doctor in 2001 after completing his medical degree with distinction in medicine and surgery at Queen’s University of Belfast and an intercalated degree in Experimental Pathology in the prestigious department of pathology at the University of Edinburgh. He was awarded the Wilson Orthopaedic Medal following additional written and clinical examinations in orthopaedic surgery.

His basic surgical training centred in Northern Ireland and included most surgical disciplines including plastic surgery. His basic surgical training was followed by a period as an experienced trainee surgeon in Trauma + Orthopaedics, during which he engaged in research and secured an extended 18-month high-volume hip + knee joint replacement fellowship in 2007 with Professor Beverland at Musgrave Park Hospital.

During this high-volume hip + knee joint replacement fellowship, he completed a large randomised controlled clinical trial comparing knee replacement implants, which was awarded an MD by Queens University of Belfast.

In 2008, he began his higher surgical training dedicated to Trauma + Orthopaedics within the Northern Ireland Deanery, passing his FRCS examinations, before undertaking a additional 12 month fellowship at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital, that was accredited by the Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST), the Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) in Trauma + Orthopaedics and by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Since 2014, Mr McCaffrey has been a NHS Consultant Trauma + Orthopaedic Surgeon at Altnagelvin Area Hospital within the Western Health and Social Care Trust. His NHS practice has evolved to focus on the treatment of hip and knee arthritis with standard joint replacement.

His private practice mirrors his NHS practice with regards standard hip + knee joint replacement but also includes robotic assisted hip + knee joint replacement using the MAKO SmartRoboticsTM system from December 2023, when Mr McCaffrey was certified at the Stryker MAKO System Surgical Training Lab at Kirchberg Hospital, Luxembourg. Mr McCaffrey has become the most prolific user of robotic assisted joint replacement procedures in N. Ireland.

Mr McCaffrey treats private patients at Kingsbridge Private Hospital North West in Ballykelly focusing on the treatment of hip and knee arthritis via arthroplasty (joint replacement) procedures. He also holds clinics at Kingsbridge Hospital Belfast.

Mr McCaffrey provides an extended 25min appointment for new patients and an extended 15min appointment for follow up and telephone review appointments ensuring that his patients are provided adequate time for thorough assessment and discussion of their joint problem and available treatment options.
