Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy

    • Rapid access to scope procedures with no lengthy waiting time
    • Only 7 days from referral to procedure for red flag cases
    • Helps identify inflammation, ulcers, and tumours

Kingsbridge Private Hospital Endoscopy clinic has a team of locally based Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatobiliary Surgeons who can deliver an examination, diagnosis and ultimately treatment of conditions in the oesophagus, stomach, large and small intestines (bowel) and biliary system.

OGD Investigative Procedure

Understanding and treating various gastrointestinal disorders has been greatly aided by advanced technologies and procedures in the field of medical diagnostics. Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy, commonly known as OGD, is one of these remarkable advancements that allow physicians to delve deep into the digestive system, helping diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions.

What is an Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy?

OGD is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to visualise the upper part of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the initial portion of the small intestine). This diagnostic tool has revolutionised the field of gastroenterology, enabling healthcare professionals to detect, diagnose, and treat various gastrointestinal disorders with precision.

The OGD Procedure

Before undergoing an OGD, patients will receive a detailed explanation about the procedure. To ensure patient comfort, a mild sedative and local anesthetic are usually administered. This helps relax the patient and reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Step-by-step guide of the OGD procedure:

  1. Preparation: Patients are advised to fast for at least 6-8 hours before the procedure. This ensures that the stomach is empty, providing the endoscopist with a clear view of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
  2. Instrumentation: A flexible endoscope, a slender tube equipped with a light and a small camera at the end, is gently inserted through the mouth and guided through the esophagus, stomach, and into the duodenum. The camera sends real-time images to a monitor, allowing the healthcare provider to examine the tissues and structures in the upper digestive system.
  3. Examination: During the procedure, the endoscopist carefully inspects the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. They can identify and document any abnormalities, such as inflammation, ulcers, tumors, or bleeding.
  4. Biopsy: If necessary, the endoscopist may take small tissue samples (biopsies) for further analysis. Biopsies are particularly useful in diagnosing conditions like Barrett's esophagus, Helicobacter pylori infection, and certain cancers.
  5. Therapeutic Intervention: In addition to its diagnostic capabilities, OGD can be used for therapeutic purposes. If polyps or small tumors are discovered, they can be removed during the procedure. OGD can also be used to treat conditions like bleeding ulcers through techniques such as cauterization.
  6. Post-Procedure: After the procedure, patients are monitored as they recover from the sedative effects. They may experience mild throat discomfort, bloating, or gas, which typically subside within a few hours.

Conditions Diagnosed and Treated with OGD

OGD is an invaluable tool for diagnosing and managing various gastrointestinal conditions, including:

  1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): OGD can identify complications of GERD, such as Barrett's esophagus, which increases the risk of esophageal cancer.
  2. Peptic Ulcers: OGD is instrumental in detecting ulcers in the stomach or duodenum and assessing their severity.
  3. Celiac Disease: OGD can help confirm the diagnosis of celiac disease by visualizing damage to the small intestine's lining.
  4. Gastrointestinal Bleeding: The source of gastrointestinal bleeding, whether from ulcers, varices, or other causes, can often be identified and treated using OGD.
  5. Cancer Screening: Early-stage esophageal, stomach, and duodenal cancers can be detected and biopsied through OGD, enabling timely treatment.

Safety and Risks

OGD is generally considered safe, with minimal risks. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential complications, including bleeding, infection, and perforation. These are rare but can be serious.
